Meet Sydney Yeager

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Yeager.

Sydney, before we jump into specific questions about your work, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am not a business, I am a practicing artist and educator. I attended University of Texas, Austin and was awarded a BA, a BFA and an MFA. Upon graduation was lucky to be awarded a solo show at a non-profit, Women and their Work, Austin, Texas. Subsequently, I have been represented by various galleries in Texas.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not exactly smooth, but I count myself lucky, in that I have been able to continue painting and maintaining a studio practice for the last 34 years.

Please tell us about your work.
I am a painter. I specialize in gesturally abstract paintings. I am not a company at all. I think my work sets me apart from other painters.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have had the unflagging support of my family, husband, daughters and their spouses and children. I was awarded a Mid America Arts Alliance/NEA grant which was extremely important in validating my career choice. One of the most significant career opportunities that has come my way was to be the subject of a one person traveling exhibition, with a catalogue, organized by Clint Willour, then curator of the Galveston Arts Center. The exhibition traveled to several museums around Texas. At the same time, I received a wonderful grant from the Austin Fairchild Art Foundation. These awards, along with a Museum exhibition at Laguna Gloria Art museum, (now The Contemporary Austin) allowed my work to be seen across the state of Texas. My work has been represented by several wonderful galleries, and is currently represented by Laura Rathe Fine Art, Houston and Dallas.
