Today we’d like to introduce you to Whitney Graves.
Whitney, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a small town girl that has a driven passion for photography. At a very young age, I would dress my little sister up in cute outfits, direct her on what poses to do and fill up disposable cameras constantly. I would even go into my mother’s closet and sit for hours going through old pictures, reminiscing all of the precious memories. I took photojournalism classes in high school, where I then went into the yearbook program and became an editor! My involvement in these activities sparked me to fall in love even more with creating fun portraits and projects. After graduation, I decided to continue my education and join the medical field. However, I still craved having a creative outlet in my life for photography. I had noticed that the portrait, boudoir, and wedding photography industry had taken off and I decided that this was my chance to get back into what I loved, capturing the most special moment in someone’s life, helping make people happy in their own skin and having fun doing so! I am a self taught photographer and I take great pride in this title due to the wonderful resources available to me, as well as the inspiring mentors that have helped me along my journey. Since the first day I picked my camera back up, I have spent countless hours educating myself, taking photos and editing, to ensure I am giving my clients the best experience possible. Though starting a new business in such a populated market can be daunting, my love and passion for this career conquers any fear of the unknown. With the support of my family and friends, in addition to my drive for working hard and doing what I love, I created Whitney Graves Photography.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
With being new in this competitive industry, it can be difficult at times to get my business out into the world. However, my supportive peers and successful social media pages have been a major help. It gives potential clients a chance to see my work, but also see if we will be a great fit!
Please tell us more about your work, what you are currently focused on and most proud of.
Whitney Graves Photography specializes in lifestyle, portrait, and boudoir photography. Outdoor boudoir sessions are my absolute favorite! I love how I can help empower women through my camera lens, while utilizing the backdrop of our home state. I love boosting a woman’s confidence and helping bring out their fierce and sexy side. In each boudoir session, I hope that every woman takes that confidence boost back out into the real world with her to help conquer whatever obstacle life my bring them. In a competitive industry like photography, you really have to find your own path of what makes your personal style as an artist. I feel like I have found my niche, which is a western bohemian aesthetic. I really look forward into creating unique boudoir sessions with my style, along with lifestyle and portraits. I am very proud to present my work for others to view and enjoy, just as much as my clients do. I plan on eventually building my own studio to incorporate and emphasize my style into each session and give the option for a studio based, outdoor session or both.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
My business has been thriving ever since I have started, which I am so incredibly blessed and thankful for! I have a wonderful husband, family and friends to help share my business on social media, and by word of mouth, which I can’t thank them enough for. I would say the bad luck would definitely be the timing of COVID-19,(Corona Virus) in both my business and personal life. It has put a hold on my career, but it is so important to stay in and stay safe right now. Whitney Graves Photography might be frozen, but I am going to take advantage of this time by researching unique locations for future photo sessions and educating myself further in photography, because there is always something to learn in this industry. I truly look forward with what the future brings to my business and myself. I can’t wait to create something so unique and beautiful for each of my clients to have forever and embrace that exact moment in time over and over again!
